Mumbles and Langland
Mumbles (Mwmbwls in Welsh) is a fishing village situated at the Western end of Swansea Bay, at the entrance to the Gower Peninsula. This little bustling village (and I say village, but really it is much larger than the other villages in the rest of Gower) is host to a great variety of shops, cafes, wine bars, pubs and restaurants. Ice cream parlours are dotted along the promenade and in the main tourist season the “Mumbles Land Train” can be seen chugging its way along the sea front, transporting people to and from Swansea. Popular with the young and old alike, Mumbles is never quiet. From water sports enthusiasts, roller-bladers, cyclists and young families, to those who prefer a more dignified quiet stroll or to simply sit and watch as the bustle continues around them. Currently well known as the birthplace of Catherine Zeta Jones and Ian Hislop, Mumbles was previously a frequent haunt of Dylan Thomas and his friends. The busy pace of life continues into the night when crowds are drawn to the exclusive restaurants and the infamous “Mumbles Mile” (a large number of pubs within a very short walking distance). On the hillside behind the main shopping area of Mumbles, is Oystermouth Castle which appears to have had numerous re-builds, on account of warfare, during its chequered life. It is believed that the Lords of Gower once inhabited the castle. On the Western side of Mumbles, you will find the Pier, the famous lighthouse and two small rocky coves of Bracelet and Limeslade. The much larger, sandy Langland Bay that is very popular with surfers is a further mile around the coast.
