Port Eynon is located on the Southernmost point of the Gower peninsula and named after an 11th century Welsh Prince named Eynon. The village has a long history of oyster fishing, crabbing, lobstering and limestone quarrying, as well as the less honest trade of smuggling.
The beach at Port Eynon is easily accessible and just a short walk from Brook House. It is a holder of the European Blue Flag Award as well as the Seaside Award and has a lifeguard in operation over high season.
The house overlooks a memorial in the village churchyard, pictured alongside, dedicated to three young lifeboat men who were lost in 1916 when they went to the assistance of SS Dunvegan, which was shipwrecked off Oxwich point.
An 18th century ruin of the old salt house used for extracting salt from sea water is located a quarter of a mile from the village, just off Port Eynon Point. Many rumours exist of the building’s part in smuggling, and there is supposedly a lost tunnel leading from the salt house, down which the contraband was taken to avoid capture.
Port Eynon is situated on the 870 mile long Wales Coastal path and is well signposted from neighbouring Rhossili and Oxwich.
The Gower Peninsula was the first place in Britain to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and when you visit Gower and see the fantastic beaches and rolling views, you can appreciate why. The location is perfect for walkers, golfers, surfers, watersports enthusiasts, cyclists and families.
Gower has incredibly beautiful beaches, with Rhossili being awarded Britains Best Beach and the 9th in the world by Trip Advisor. There are plenty of bays to pick a favourite from.
Landscape and seascape aside, Gower also is steeped in history, with castles and ancient cairns all awaiting your discovery.
